This talk follows the life, education, and marriages of Catharine Akerly, daughter of a Revolutionary Patriot who attended boarding school in Pennsylvania and became musically "accomplished." Her story shows us the tightrope young women had to walk as they pursued their educational and artistic interests while also maintaining the social expectations of their era. Through her letters and music collection we can get a picture of what she believed and cared about, thereby moving beyond the social expectations and into what life was like for her.
